So how crucial was that hundred from Steven Smith on Day 1? England did really well to reduce Australia to 97/5 on the first morning after opting to bowl on an overcast morning. That's when Brad Haddin joined Smith at the crease and the duo batted with absolutely no trouble whatsoever. Haddin made 75 before ending his 128-run stand with Smith but the latter continued and went on make a sensational 115. Eventually, the hosts were bowled out for 326 and England had to see off a tricky final few overs just before stumps. However, the start with the bat wasn't all that great for them as Johnson had Carberry caught brilliantly down the leg side by Lyon. The second morning was a bit better for batting
